Department of Physics, Graduate School of Science, Mr.Morita
I visited Shanghai Jiao Tong University (“SJTU”) to participate in the international summer school “The Largest and The Smallest” from July 7th to 19th, 2024. The summer school aims at providing university students with cutting-edge research in many physics fields and valuable experiences in Tsung-Dao Lee Institute (“TDLI”), which is one of the best research institutes in China. I joined the seminars by famous professors about novel quantum matter, quantum field theory, particle physics, astrophysics, and so on. Among the classes, I am especially interested in the quantum computing course conducted by Prof. Hong Ding from TDLI. He has made many scientific discoveries, including discovering pseudogap in cuprate superconductors, discovering Weyl fermions in solids, and discovering Majorana zero modes in iron-based superconductors. After the classes, I asked some questions to him, and he taught me many interesting things about topological materials. The poster session by researchers was also interesting to me. I found many intriguing topics and discussed them for a couple of hours.
During my stay, I had a lot of chances to visit laboratories in TDLI. For example, STM/STS equipment and laser systems in TDLI were amazing. I also visited the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (“SSRF”) near SJTU. SSRF is one of the best synchrotron radiation facilities in the world. In my current research, I usually use synchrotron radiation light to observe the electronic structure of quantum materials. Therefore, I was so impressed when I saw three ARPES beamlines in SSRF. These experiences made me think that SJUT (especially Prof. Hong Ding’s laboratory) became one of the candidates for my future international internship.
Although it was my first time to visit China, I was able to have a wonderful time in Shanghai. During the stay, I visited the traditional water village “Zhujiajiao” guided by Chinese volunteer staff in the program. I could feel the historical aspect of China there. Moreover, I am pleased to meet many kind people from China but also from other countries. My roommate is from Singapore, and we spend a lot of time together because he was very nice. Finally, thank you for your perfect support regarding the whole stay including staff members of GP-MS and SJTU.
