In mid-February, we had a meaningful and pleasant trip in Germany. The main destination of this three days trip is Techniche Universitat Darmstadt (TUD), located in the city Darmstadt that is called as “City of science”.

In the first day morning, we were given a nice introduction of TUD by Prof. Albe, from which we got a lot useful information and the initial impression of Darmstadt. In the afternoon, we visited the laborites related to our own research. I visited several labs and finally there is a lab that do the similar research as mine. The leader of this lab, Prof. Zhang, introduced their broad research fields to me and I also gave the introduction of my research. Then, I communicated with the students in this lab about our recent works. It seemed that each student in this lab does quite different works. I hope we can establish the collaboration in the future.

Next morning, all the students had a lab tour. The giant experimental equipment impressed me a lot. After that, I visited another lab with experimental set of Raman spectra that is my research field. Although I do calculation in research, the experimental set is helpful for me to understand the experimental results. In the afternoon, we toured the downtown of Darmstadt with a professional guide where has many historical buildings. The guide told us many interesting historical stories about the old buildings, however I did not get a lot because of the cold and windy weather. The unpredictable and changeable weather is also very important information for us.

In the last day, we left Darmstadt and went to Frankfort by the train. In Frankfort, we separated. There are many interesting museums along the river, for instance art museum, city history museum, film museum, etc. I randomly chose several of them to visit. Finally, we gathered at Frankfort station and backed to Japan.

During the three days trip, I found a possible lab to exchange and knew a little about TUD and Darmstadt in terms of not only academic atmosphere but also weather, food and house rent. It is a bright memory in 2020 especially, as we may need to restrict our moving for a long time.
